The biggest Bear turned bullish. All-In?

Over the weekend, Wilson was also the author of Morgan Stanley's influential Sunday Start weekly which sets the narrative not only for the key bank themes over the rest of the week, but also is a signpost for Morgan Stanley's clients, and perhaps not surprisingly, Wilson used the podium to expand why on such short notice, he has U-turned from Wall Street's de facto uber bear to one of the biggest, if not most vocal, bulls. 

"This time, we have a potentially much more inflationary combination of an unprecedented targeted fiscal stimulus and possible deregulation of the banks to get the cash into the hands of lower income individuals and small businesses that are inclined to spend it. Such a dramatic shift in US fiscal and monetary policy relative to other regions should lead to a materially weaker dollar, which is ultimately the easiest path to reflation not only for the US, but also the world.

...with the forced liquidation of assets in the past month largely behind us, unprecedented and unbridled monetary and fiscal intervention led by the US, and the most attractive valuation we have seen since 2011, we stick to our recent view that the worst is behind us for this cyclical bear market that began two years ago, not last month." - Morgan Stanley's Wilson link

CS Strategy joins GS, JPM, MS etc in "consensus-calling" for equity markets to turn lower....

What aren’t you buying?

It is difficult to try to buy what has really been hammered. Some of the hospitality stocks and airline stocks, for example, could be a death trap—some of them may never come back. One place to look for opportunity is in companies that will perform in what I expect to be a resurgence in the United States in manufacturing.

But one thing I would caution is that if earnings continue to fall as I expect them to, S&P earnings could get as low as $100 this year. Given the traditional market multiple of about 15 times earnings, that would put the S&P at about 1,500, still about a thousand points lower than we are today. Certainly, we are down from the recent peak of 3,386, so we’ve made a big move, but we still have a pretty good move to make. Investors should probably focus their activity on bonds at this point. link

No, no, no, not in that way but in this way, specifically, on the world’s largest ETF, and therefore largest ETF-tracker fund, the venerable SPY:

''We get a similar picture in Figure 5, which shows our short interest proxy, i.e. the Quantity-On-Loan, of the SPY US Equity ETF, the biggest equity ETF in the world. Figure 5 shows that this short interest proxy had increased steeply over the course the four equity correction weeks (Figure 5), exceeding its previous high in December 2018. But this indicator reversed some of its previous increase in the previous week’s short covering rally. This past week our short interest proxy on SPY US Equity ETF appears to have risen a bit and remains firmly in oversold territory.

FOMO Rally?

Many of these young men and women were not investors before, it seems. They were motivated to get involved in the market by the massive, rapid drop we have seen over the last month or two. They have heard stories of people who, at the depths of the recession in 2008, bought Apple (AAPL) at twelve or thirteen bucks, or Amazon (AMZN) below sixty-five, or even stocks like United Health Care (UNH) that were dragged down with everything else despite being in a “safe” sector, and could be had for under twenty bucks at the end of ’08.

Of course, they don’t hear about those that thought that GM or Lehman Brothers, or a few other notable companies, were “too big to fail” before they declared bankruptcy, or the many that got burned betting on the retracement that came at the end of 2008, just before another push down took us to the lows, but that isn’t the point. The fact is, their experience leads them to view a big drop in the market as a time of opportunity, not peril.

And they are probably right.

Não me importo com as citações, mas gostava que o user que as coloca, desse também alguma opinião sobre elas, pois muitas delas ao entrarem assim a cru sem serem condimentadas não me despertam o interesse para as ler...

Não sei se já pensaste nisto, mas em muitos outras crises bolsistas, os seus ressaltos começaram e continuaram o seu caminho ascendente muito embora a situação económica ainda tenha continuado a piorar, ou seja, a pandemia pode começar a dissipar-se mas os seus consequentes efeitos negativos económicos persistirem, e no entanto, as bolsas começarem a subir. Apenas para reflexão.
